SPARC Knowledge Management and Strategic Communications Toolkit

Introduction

SPARC developed the Knowledge Management and Strategic Communications Toolkit to help staff in ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to recognise the opportunities for discovering, managing and sharing knowledge, and to facilitate flows of knowledge within and between MDAs and to the people MDAs serve. Knowledge management can help create, apply, store and share knowledge, and has been proven to empower staff and improve service delivery in state institutions and MDAs. Strategic communications complement knowledge management. Effective communication and knowledge management go hand in hand. The five sections in the toolkit contain tools of various types, checklists, action plans, examples and tips.

How this toolkit is organised

The toolkit is divided into five main sections:

Section 1: Knowledge Management & Strategic Communications Guide and Toolkit – provides an overview of the subject and this toolkit.
Section 2: Knowledge management resources – contains tools such as the Communities of Practice (CoP) Guide.
Section 3: Strategic communications tools and resources – contains tools such as a Strategic Communications Plan Template and a Communications Workplan.
Section 4: Media relations – contains a number of media tools such as sample press releases and interview techniques.
Section 5: Training modules – communication for government – contains presentations, materials, sample exercises and templates that trainers in MDAs can use to conduct training internally on strategic communications.
